What is Noncomforming Use?

A use of property that is not permitted by the zoning ordinance. Nonconforming uses are often grandfathered in, meaning that they are allowed to continue even though they are no longer permitted. However, nonconforming uses may be subject to restrictions, such as a requirement that they be removed after a certain period of time.
